Award Scholarships

Before you apply, read about each of the scholarships.

 

Welcome to the 2024 Application! There are four scholarships available. Read all of the information about each one before clicking on the Enter Application Site button. If you are eligible to apply for more than one scholarship, you may do so but will only be awarded one scholarship. Family of Psi Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., members are not eligible to apply.

A Note About Recommendations

We require two recommenders to complete an online form. You will be instructed to provide the names and emails of two recommenders so that they can be notified of the form in our system. They will each receive an email with instructions on how to complete the online form. They can upload additional information about you as well but the survey questions will have to be completed online. There are no exceptions to this process. You may want to share this information with them beforehand so that they know what to expect and can be prepared. 


Pearl Elegance Foundation Scholarship 

The Pearl Elegance Foundation Scholarship is an academic scholarship designed for students who demonstrate high academic achievement, service to the community, and exceptional potential. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Minimum GPA: 2.7 cumulative grade point average
  • Type of Institute: Two or Four-year college or university (enrolled full-time)
  • Type of Recipient: High school senior or undergraduate having completed at least 15 hours of college credits
  • Essay Questions: 
    • High School Senior (500 words) - Each year, Pearl Elegance Foundation receives applications from students who are dynamic and deserving of a scholarship. What experience can you share with us that you believe will set you apart from the other applicants?
    • Undergraduate (750 words) - The Pearl Elegance Foundation supports the community by focusing its service in five key target areas: 1-Uplift Our Community; 2-Build Economic Wealth; 3-Enhance Our Environment; 4-Empower Families; and 5-Advocate for Social Justice. Select one target and describe how you have been impacted, plan to make an impact, or are currently making an impact.
  • Area(s) of Study: Any 
  • Residency: State of Maryland 

Pearl/Golden Membership Scholarship

The Pearl/Golden Membership Scholarship has been established to help narrow the opportunity gaps that some African American students face throughout their educational careers. It is open to high school seniors with residency in the State of Maryland who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Amount: $1,000
  • Minimum GPA: 2.5 cumulative grade point average
  • Type of Institute: Historically Black College or University (HBCU)
  • Type of Recipient: High School Senior
  • Essay Question: 500 words
    • Describe how you overcame obstacles and/or challenges involving your school, social, and/or family life. 
  • Area of Study: Any
  • Residency: State of Maryland

Silver Star Scholarship

The Silver Star Scholarship provides individuals interested in pursuing higher education, financial support to bring the pursuit one step closer.  It is open to high school seniors and college (undergraduate and graduate) students with residency in Laurel, Bowie, or Greenbelt, Maryland who plan to attend or who are already attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Amount: $1,500
  • Minimum GPA:  2.5 cumulative grade point average
  • Type of Institute: Historically Black College or University (HBCU)
  • Type of Recipient: High School Senior or Any College Student (undergraduate or graduate) 
  • Essay Questions:
    • High School Senior (500 words) - What do you believe are the benefits of attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), and how will attending one impact your future aspirations?
    • College students (750 words) - The Supreme Court has ruled that colleges cannot use race as a decision factor in college admissions. What do you think will be the impact of this ruling and should colleges consider other approaches to achieve racial diversity?
  • Area of Study: Any
  • Residency: You must reside in the city of Laurel, Bowie, or Greenbelt, Maryland to apply for this scholarship. 

Spring 22 Initiates Scholarship

The Spring 22 Initiates Scholarship is an effort to expand young adult engagement in higher educational opportunities. It has been established by women who were initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®, Psi Epsilon Omega Chapter, in the spring of 2022. It is open to high school seniors who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).   

Eligibility Criteria

  • Amount: $1,000
  • Minimum GPA: 2.5 cumulative grade point average 
  • Type of Institute: Historically Black College or University (HBCU)
  • Type of Recipient: High School Senior
  • Essay Question: 500 words
    • What do you believe are the benefits of attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), and how will attending one impact your future aspirations?
  • Area of Study: Any
  • Residency: State of Maryland
